Family constellations
Healing your roots, releasing what you carry and finding inner peace
What are family constellations, and why is it important to do them?
Sometimes we feel that certain situations in our life repeat themselves over and over again. Relationships that hurt us, difficulty building healthy bonds, guilt we can't trace back to anything, fear of abandonment, resentments we can't let go of, or deep wounds connected to our mother, our father or another member of our family.
Sometimes we carry emotions we were never able to express, words that hurt us, absences that left an emptiness, and experiences that shaped the way we love, trust and relate to others.
Family constellations are an approach to emotional and relational exploration that aims to help us recognize how our family history, our emotional bonds and certain learned patterns can influence our life today.
From a systemic point of view, each person is part of a family story that began long before they were born. That story holds experiences of love, togetherness, loss, separation, silence and conflict that can influence the way we learn to relate to others.
What happens when we don't heal our family wounds?
When we don't acknowledge our emotional wounds, we can keep living from pain without realizing it. We might react out of fear, constantly seek other people's approval, feel that we must carry our family's problems, or repeat relationships in which we end up suffering.
At times, we may also feel guilty for choosing a different path from our parents', for setting boundaries, or for stepping away from relationships that hurt us.
This doesn't mean we are doomed to repeat our story. It means we can pause, look at what we learned and begin to make more conscious choices.
A family constellation can offer a space to look at these dynamics, acknowledge our emotions and understand what we need to transform in order to live with greater inner freedom.
How are family constellations related to energetic karma?
Some spiritual perspectives speak of karmic burdens, family loyalties or energetic ties that we feel keep us bound to experiences from the past.
These terms can be used as a spiritual way of understanding what we feel we are still dragging along: guilt, resentment, fear, unconscious promises, or patterns that seem to repeat from one generation to the next.
At Despertando Aquí y Ahora, we can approach these experiences from a spiritual and self-knowledge perspective, respecting each person's history and beliefs.
The purpose is not to blame our ancestors, nor to claim that we necessarily inherit their suffering, but to recognize how our history has influenced us and to discover what we can do today to build a different life.
What can we work on during a family constellation?
- Mother and father wounds: exploring how childhood experiences and our bond with our parents can influence our self-esteem, our sense of security and the way we love.
- Guilt and resentment: acknowledging emotions that are still present and beginning to find healthy ways to process them.
- Distant family relationships: understanding conflicts, silences, separations or difficulties in communication.
- Repeating patterns: noticing whether there are learned ways of relating that lead us into similar situations.
- Fear of abandonment and rejection: exploring how these experiences can affect our current relationships.
- Grief and family loss: making room for the emotions that come with goodbyes and changes in the family.
- Boundaries and personal freedom: learning to love our family without feeling that we must sacrifice our well-being in order to belong.
- Forgiveness and inner reconciliation: working toward a deeper understanding of our history, without denying the harm we may have experienced.
How is a family constellation done?
The process begins with a conversation in which the person shares, as far as they feel comfortable, what they want to understand or work on. They don't need to share any details they'd rather not.
From there, an exploration exercise can be done using different tools, depending on the person's needs and the focus of the session.
The tools that may be used include:
- Representing family bonds: using figures, objects, pieces of paper or representatives, we explore how the person perceives the relationships and emotional distances within their family.
- Genogram or family tree: a way to organize information about generations, relationships, separations, losses and significant events.
- Questions for conscious reflection: they help recognize emotions, beliefs and learned patterns.
- Guided visualization: it offers a space to connect with emotions and explore new ways of understanding one's own story.
- Phrases of acknowledgment and boundaries: they allow us to symbolically express what was left pending, acknowledge the pain and tell our own responsibility apart from that of others.
- Integration exercises: they help identify which concrete changes the person can bring into their daily life after the session.
These tools don't seek to impose an interpretation on the family, but to help the person discover what their experiences mean and what they need in order to move forward.
Do you have to forgive in order to heal?
No. Forgiveness should not be an obligation or a condition for healing.
Each person has their own timing. Sometimes the first step isn't forgiving, but acknowledging that something hurt, validating what we feel and no longer minimizing our experiences.
Healing also doesn't mean justifying the harm, forgetting what happened, restoring a relationship or going back to someone who hurt us.
We can work on letting go of the emotional weight of an experience, setting healthy boundaries and recovering our peace of mind, even when reconciling with a family member isn't possible or isn't advisable.
What can a family constellation bring to my life?
This process can help you:
- Better understand your history and your family bonds.
- Identify emotional patterns you want to change.
- Make room for feelings you have kept locked away.
- Develop a more conscious relationship with yourself.
- Recognize the boundaries you need to care for your well-being.
- Explore new ways of relating to your loved ones.
- Find personal resources to move toward a freer, more conscious life.
Every experience is different. A constellation doesn't guarantee that a conflict will be resolved, nor does it erase emotional wounds on its own, but it can become an opportunity to reflect, recognize your needs and open up new possibilities for change.
At Despertando Aquí y Ahora, we walk with you as you look at your story with love and awareness
I deeply believe in the importance of looking inward to recognize what needs attention, understanding and care.
We can't change what happened in our past, but we can begin to transform the way we relate to that story.
Honoring our roots doesn't mean carrying everything our ancestors lived through. It means recognizing where we come from, learning from our experiences and allowing ourselves to build a different present.
Because healing isn't rejecting our family — it's learning to find our own place within our story.
Your past is part of you, but it doesn't have to decide your whole future.
At Despertando Aquí y Ahora, I walk with you along this path of self-knowledge, emotional release and personal transformation, respecting your story, your timing and your process.
Despertando Aquí y Ahora: a space to look inward, understand your story and open yourself to new possibilities in life.
